|Arthur Murphy (1906 - 1946)
Bridge Worker No 1, edition of 34, tusche lithograph 12 x 9 1/2 inches, signed and titled in pencil by the artist [man seen from the rear, with a horizontal bar from one hand
to the other under his chin],
From a series of WPA/FAP prints executed through the printmaking division of the Northern California Federal Art Project. They document the construction of the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. Although the artist was equally adept at fluid calligraphic lines to simulate dancers in motion, in this series, Murphy concentrates his vision on the will and physical power of the men who built some of the West's most monumental and challenging structures.
