John Claude Nattes (English, 1765-1822)
Hastings
pen and ink drawing from a sketch book, 16 x 10 inches
signed by the artist.
Nattes scholar, Aidan Flood, has provided information relayed to him by the curator of the Museum at Hastings. The building with the ladder is either the upper or lower “light”.
The two buildings were lit at night and the sailors from the fishing fleet lined the light up to guide them safely toshore. Apparently the buildings survive, but in a much modified form. One of the structures clearly appears in a view of the Hastings Fishmarket by James Rouse, dated 1824. Aidan Flood says the only dates he has established for Nattes in Hastings are 1803 and 1836.
